Rather than erasing unsafe data, one alignment team routes it through MoE experts and gates the output

AspireAI community · arXiv (NeurIPS 2026)
The dominant alignment playbook filters unsafe training data out, which the authors argue throws away domain knowledge and produces blanket refusals on sensitive but benign questions. SafeMoE takes the opposite position: harmful corpora are kept but isolated into domain-specific low-rank adapters trained only on unsafe material, and a lightweight gating network learns to orchestrate those experts toward safe answers using as few as 100 curated safe responses per domain. On strict safety benchmarks the authors report a relative improvement of more than 20 percent in safe response rate over the strongest baseline, RealSafe-R1 on PKU-SafeRLHF, and more than a 15 point absolute gain. The design is an interesting alternative to erasure-based alignment, but it depends on the quality of a small curated safety set and on MoE routing behaving as intended, and the paper's own evaluations are the only evidence offered so far.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE

One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
