Hugging Face released Carbon-X, a 14.8B open model you can talk to about DNA in plain English

AspireAI community · Hugging Face / HuggingFaceBio
Carbon-X is an Apache-2.0 decoder-only model from Hugging Face, the Zhongguancun Academy and the University of Naples Federico II. You paste raw DNA into an ordinary chat prompt and it answers in English, predicting whether mutations are benign or pathogenic, identifying regulatory regions and predicting next bases. A hybrid tokenizer shares one stream between text and DNA, encoding DNA as non-overlapping 6-mers so one token covers six base pairs. The model card reports 66.7 percent average across five DNA benchmarks with thinking disabled, 27 points above the Qwen3-14B it starts from and close to GPT-6.1 Sol at roughly 1/1,800 of the inference cost, with weights that fit on a single 80GB GPU. The honest limitation: those are the authors' own numbers, and a genome-language model trained this way has not been independently validated for clinical use.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE

One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
