The Code Behind the Layout: AI Agents for Analog Layout Generators

AspireAI community · arXiv
This paper asks what a generator framework still buys you when a frontier model can draw analog layout geometry directly from design intent. Running controlled experiments on the gLayout framework in SKY130, the authors find the main obstacle to drawing a layout directly is time and token cost, while the main advantage of building on a generator framework is reusability: verified primitives keep each model edit small enough to check, and parameters let one edit be evaluated across a whole family of layouts. Their conclusion is that a model is most effective when it develops the layout from the generator source of the family the design intent belongs to, testing each edit on the family members most likely to fail, so one verified change improves every layout that generator produces. Those family-test results can then serve as supervision for a local model that learns edits holding across the family at a fraction of the inference cost. The experiments are confined to one generator framework and one process node.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE

One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
