Factory shipped Droid 1.0, a frontier agent harness that claims up to 20 percent better efficiency than native model harnesses

AspireAI community · Factory Research
Factory released Droid 1.0, a rewrite of the agent harness that surrounds a model, and says it runs up to 20 percent more efficiently than the native harnesses built for those same models. The change is mostly prompt-and-protocol engineering rather than a new model: a Script mode lets one model request carry hundreds of tool calls instead of re-sending instructions every few steps, and a cache monitor keeps the base prompt warm, which the company says is what lets Factory cut the base prompt from 20,887 input tokens to 13,055 between two of its own releases. The harness ships in the desktop app, the terminal UI and the Droid SDK, and Factory describes an internal 'Agent Factory' loop that proposes and tests harness changes across every model it touches. The caveat is that every efficiency number here is Factory's own measurement, and 'up to 20 percent' is a vendor upper bound rather than an average across models.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE

One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
