A bimanual robot data-collection rig with no external tracking, plus 40 hours of training-ready demonstrations, fine-tuned two vision-language-action policies to 10/10 and 8/10 on a pick-and-place task

UMI-Live is a full-stack open-source bimanual Universal Manipulation Interface system that integrates camera and LiDAR-inertial sensing, onboard compute and power into custom hardware, so demonstrations can be recorded in the wild without external tracking equipment or in-environment calibration, while an asynchronous pipeline runs parallel SLAM reconstruction and publishes training-ready datasets. The authors validate the data by fine-tuning pi-0.5 and MolmoAct2, reporting 10/10 and 8/10 success respectively on a bimanual pick-and-place task, and release 40 hours of data across three tasks along with hardware designs, software and reproduction guides. The validation is a single pick-and-place task, so the data quality claim rests on a narrow slice of what the released corpus covers.

Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
