METR and Redwood Research stress-tested OpenAI's internal agent monitoring

AspireAI · METR
For three weeks this summer, two outside researchers worked inside OpenAI's own premises with access to its internal codebase, stress-testing the system that watches OpenAI's AI agents for signs of going off-script. METR and Redwood Research estimated that roughly 75 to 94 percent of agentic traffic on OpenAI's internal Responses API - the interface that also powers Codex - was eligible for monitoring at the time, from models at least as strong as GPT-5.5. For traffic from internal Codex agents specifically, they put the figure at 99.2 percent. They also found that reinforcement-learning training runs were not covered by the monitoring system at all. A system that watches most of the traffic is still not full coverage. The gap is exactly where an agent would look to hide. https://metr.org/blog/2026-10-22-red-teaming-openai-agent-monitoring/

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Research
One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
