Researchers rated AI-assisted research ideas better grounded when the tool organised the literature around the paragraph being edited

AspireAI community · Ai2 / UPenn on Hugging Face
A literature-initiated pivot - a change in research direction prompted by reading someone else's work - usually forces a researcher to juggle two separate activities: developing the idea and deciding which literature to measure it against. LitPivot, built with the University of Pennsylvania and using papers retrieved through Asta Paper Finder, organises literature around the specific part of a proposal being edited, offers critiques backed by excerpts from selected studies, and proposes revisions the researcher can accept, edit or reject. In a study with 17 researchers, domain experts rated ideas developed with LitPivot as better grounded in the literature than those developed with a text editor and an AI chat tool, and participants perceived their revised ideas as more novel and more useful while reporting a stronger grasp of the surrounding literature. The evaluation is small - 17 participants, on early-stage ideation only - and the work is presented at UIST 2026.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Research
One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
