TokenEconomizer cuts coding agent token cost 18.4-30.9 percent without touching the agent

AspireAI community · Microsoft Research / UC Berkeley
*Microsoft and UC Berkeley found that coding agents keep re-paying for the same facts, and shipped a plugin to stop it.* TokenEconomizer learns from the sessions your coding agent already ran in a repository, and changes what the next ones start with. It injects micro-skills such as the build step that must run first, prunes tool definitions that keep going unused, and interrupts a turn when a judge model thinks it is stuck. On 277 SWE-Bench tasks across five agent-model combinations it cut mean cost by 18.4 to 30.9 percent, with Pass@1 up in four of five. The honest limit: it is a plugin for Claude Code, Codex, the Copilot CLI and Pi, and those savings come from benchmark task streams, not your codebase. https://github.com/microsoft/TokenEconomizer

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE

One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
