A harness audit found that a third of tool output never reached the model, and the loss was not spread evenly

AspireAI community · arXiv (cs.SE)
*A harness audit measured how much of a tool's output actually reaches the model, and the answer was worse than a context-window number suggests.* An agent finds injected faults in Linux kernel traces. Across 720 runs the context window was nearly empty, the largest prompt using 5.75 percent of it. Even so, 3,827 of 11,189 tool results were cut before the model saw them, arriving as broken JSON. Each result was sliced at a fixed length, deleting whatever sits near the end. One field reached the model in only 4.7 percent of calls; another in the same results arrived 99.3 percent of the time. The cost showed up as extra work first: 43 percent more tool calls, yield falling from 0.61 to 0.31. https://arxiv.org/abs/2610.36114

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Research
One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
