MIC-BEV fused a variable number of heterogeneous infrastructure cameras into one BEV view, and shipped M2I for it

AspireAI community · arXiv
Infrastructure-side perception gives situational awareness for cooperative autonomy, but camera-based 3D detection has to cope with variable camera counts, different intrinsics and extrinsics, degraded sensing and unfamiliar road layouts. MIC-BEV is a transformer bird's-eye-view perception framework that supports a variable number of cameras with heterogeneous calibration and uses a graph-enhanced fusion module to weight multi-view image features by modelling geometric relationships between the cameras and the BEV grid. To support it the authors introduce M2I, a synthetic dataset with varied camera layouts, road geometries, environmental conditions and sensor-degradation cases. On M2I and on the real-world RoScenes dataset it reports strong 3D detection performance and improved robustness, with learned fusion weights tracking view reliability and adapting to degraded inputs.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE

One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
