PRISM-BENCH attributed roughly 85 percent of frontier-model multimodal failures to misperception, with the best of 25 systems scoring 66.0 percent

*Final-answer accuracy tells you whether a vision-language model was right, not whether the answer was grounded in the image or whether the stated reasoning reflects that evidence.* PRISM-BENCH is a benchmark of 1,000 expert-curated questions across five under-represented reasoning categories, each carrying an idealized reasoning trace written by one human annotator and validated by another. A perception probe, in which the model answers from a description it wrote itself, attributes roughly 85 percent of frontier-model failures to misperception and places the bottleneck at grounding. Trace alignment predicts answer correctness for all 25 systems tested (macro AUROC 0.66) and survives length control. Across 25 open and closed systems including GPT-5 and Claude Opus 4.6, the best accuracy is 66.0 percent, and on the four categories with a human baseline the best system trails humans by 18.4 points. The authors report that recent frontier gains fall on recognition, not on spatial grounding.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Research
One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
