Four Mac Studios ran a near-trillion-parameter model at over 36 tokens per second

AspireAI community · Apple Machine Learning Research
MLX is Apple's open-source array framework for Apple silicon, and this release adds RDMA over Thunderbolt so multiple Mac Studios can behave as one machine. The benchmark shown is Muse Spark Open, a mixture-of-experts model of 816B parameters evaluated in NVFP4, running on a cluster of four Mac Studios at over 36 tokens per second with an 8,192-token context - above average human reading speed - with pipeline and tensor parallel schemes compared against the previous M3 Ultra generation. Mistral Medium 3.5 and Qwen 3.8 are benchmarked alongside, and the M5 generation's GPU Neural Accelerator is credited with dedicated matrix multiplication support. These are Apple's own numbers on Apple's own hardware, and the setup needs a multi-thousand-dollar cluster of Mac Studios rather than a single desk.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE

One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
