PUBLIC EDITION

OpenAI stops letting anyone build a custom GPT today, and retires every one of them on December 11

AspireAI community · OpenAI Help Center
OpenAI's Custom GPT retirement FAQ sets two hard dates. Creation of new custom GPTs is scheduled to end on October 26, 2026, and every custom GPT plus its public page becomes inaccessible on December 11, 2026, or February 11, 2027 for Enterprise workspaces holding an approved deferral. The replacement is a plugin: a GPT's instructions become a skill, connected apps are added as apps, and knowledge files are copied into the plugin's reference files, while the GPT's selected model does not carry over and custom actions are not transferred at all. Creators migrate from My GPTs via Migrate to plugin, the migrated plugin starts private and loses the original GPT's sharing settings, and the original turns read-only after migration. The FAQ warns a migrated plugin may respond differently and tells creators to test familiar prompts plus at least one harder case, and that a rebuilt custom integration should not be assumed to match the original action.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Research
One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
