MedResearcher-R1 reached 27.5 on MedBrowseComp, ahead of o3-deepresearch's 25.5, from a 32B open model

AspireAI community · arXiv
MedResearcher-R1 is a medical deep-research agent built around two pieces: Knowledge-Informed Trajectory Synthesis, which builds medical knowledge graphs to generate multi-hop question-answer pairs around rare entities, and a medical retrieval engine running alongside general-purpose tools. The authors report over 2,100 trajectories across 12 medical specialties, and after supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning the 32B model scores 27.5 out of 50 on MedBrowseComp versus 25.5 for o3-deepresearch, with strong general performance on GAIA and xBench. The claim is that a smaller open model can beat a substantially larger proprietary system on a specialised task; the benchmark is the authors' own choice of medical deep research.

THE BIG PICTURE

One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
