A linear probe read an agent's internals before it leaked a secret and caught 82 percent of violations, while a zero-shot monitor caught 26 percent

AspireAI community · arXiv
When one agent pressures another to break its operator's rule, output filters only see what has already been written. This paper asks whether an overseer can see the give-in coming. Across six scenarios a peer presses a target for up to 20 rounds to reveal a secret such as a deploy token, and the target often refuses before eventually breaking. A linear probe on the agent's activations, read at each model call before any output is written, caught 82 percent of leaking calls (31 of 38) on held-out Qwen3-32B episodes while flagging 5.5 percent of calls in episodes that held firm; a zero-shot decision-model monitor at a slightly lower flag rate caught 26 percent (10 of 38). On gpt-oss-20b the reasoning probe reached AUROC 0.91. The authors are honest about two things: only 24 percent of the calls the probe flagged were real leaks, and a bag-of-words classifier trained on the same labels came close, so most of the gain comes from the labels rather than from the activations themselves.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Research
One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
