Safety alignment is shallow, so the defender should occupy the first tokens: an explicit decision span beat every baseline across fourteen benchmarks

AspireAI community · arXiv
The paper argues multi-turn jailbreaks succeed because safety behaviour is concentrated in a model's first few output tokens, and that existing defences supervise only the surface form of a response without ever giving the model an explicit safety decision to learn. Its Assess-to-Decide-to-Respond framework has the defender assess the user's intent, commit to a parseable safety decision, and only then generate a reply conditioned on that commitment, trained by reinforcement learning at the payload turn. A self-verified reward checks the committed label against the conversation's known nature and needs no judge and no annotation. Across two model families and fourteen benchmarks spanning safety, utility and helpfulness, both variants matched or exceeded every baseline trained on the same data, and the lead held under six independent judges. The trade-off is that the safety lead comes with a modest cost to helpfulness, and the aligned baselines never sample a comply label at more than 0.2 percent.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Research
One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
