A survey of released GPU kernels found 19 cases where batching changed the answer

AspireAI community · arXiv (cs.LG / cs.SE)
When a serving system batches your requests, the same prompt can come back with a different answer, and a survey of released kernels found 19 cases where it does. The authors checked 83 batch-applicable released kernel artifacts and confirmed 19 batch-invariance violations, where numerical output shifts when a request lands next to different neighbours. The fix is a gate, not a better prompt. Their plug-in combines static dependency analysis with dynamic bitwise comparison across batch contexts, rejecting candidates before benchmarking. Across three agent frameworks it lifted the batch-invariance pass rate from 67.6 to 91.9 percent while keeping 91.8 percent of the baseline speedup. The honest limit: it enforces consistency for a request, not that the kernel's math is right. https://arxiv.org/abs/2610.36623

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE

One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
