META-Robot let robots write their own evaluation criteria, so new skills came with a way to judge them
AspireAI community · arXiv
LLM-based robot agents can generate control programs, but generalising to new tasks usually depends on elaborate scaffolding, and adding skills alone says nothing about how to assess whether a new capability is real. META-Robot couples self-cognition with capability scaling by expanding the criteria through which the agent evaluates and develops its skills. Action-level predicates make execution outcomes explicit and available for LLM reasoning, so the agent can identify its own limits, extend the relevant evaluation criteria and guide structured skill expansion, with proprioceptive feedback grounding the process in the robot's physical state. Experiments in simulation and on real robots report stronger overall task performance, generalisation to new tasks, continued expansion of skills and criteria, and effective use of non-visual proprioceptive signals.

Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
