SRHarness shows the runtime harness matters as much as the model in agentic symbolic regression: 93.69% symbolic accuracy versus 62.16% for SR-Scientist under the same DeepSeek backbone

SRHarness is a domain-specific harness for agentic symbolic regression built on three mechanisms: composable scientific actions over raw, transformed and candidate-derived quantities; persistent scientific state that retains evaluated hypotheses; and trajectory lifecycle management for continuation, branching, restart and termination. With DeepSeek-v4-flash-0731 on LLM-SRBench it reaches 93.69% symbolic accuracy on LSR-Transform versus 62.16% for SR-Scientist, and 72.97% on an anonymised variant that strips scientific descriptions and variable semantics versus 39.64%. The authors also report that handing Codex the same scientific tools does not reproduce the gain, which is the paper's real claim: harness structure, not tool access, drove the difference. Results are from the authors on a single benchmark.

Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
