Vercel added Virtual Models to AI Gateway, letting a team swap the model behind a task without touching code or redeploying

AspireAI community · Vercel
Virtual Models are an abstraction of the model string an app passes around. You create an ID for a job - say vmc/coding-agent - point it at a model, and from then on the configuration lives in AI Gateway rather than in your code: change the model, set fallbacks and priority, or enforce Zero Data Retention centrally, and every app using that ID picks it up without a code change or redeploy. The operational pitch is governance rather than convenience, because anyone on a team can call a virtual model while platform and security roles control who can change it, and a candidate ID can be pointed at a new model and evaluated before the production one is switched over. Vercel notes 125 new models from more than 10 labs landed on AI Gateway in the last 90 days, roughly 10 a week, which is the practical argument for indirection. Virtual Models work with image, video, speech, embedding and realtime models as well as text, and sit alongside the AI SDK and the OpenAI- and Anthropic-compatible APIs. The honest limit: this is a routing and configuration layer, not a quality improvement - a better model behind the same ID still has to earn its place on your evals.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE

One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
