AgentHeal found web-agent task success falls from 89.4 to 43.7 percent once access barriers appear

AspireAI community · arXiv (Liu, Du, Sun, Tan)
Web agents are usually benchmarked as if every page they need is reachable, but dead links, authentication walls, rate limits and anti-scraping defences block the primary path and make agents abort, loop, or quietly relax the user's constraints. AgentHeal defines goal-preserving resource recovery - detect a non-transient barrier, pivot to a legitimate alternative source, and still satisfy the original objective - and measures it across nine barrier families in both a counterfactual sandbox and real-website replay. Average task success drops sharply from 89.4 percent to 43.7 percent under those barriers, with agents falling for deceptive look-alikes, failing to escalate to users, violating access policies, or burning compute on futile retries. The drop is an average across backbones and barrier families rather than a per-model figure.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE

One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
