AWS shipped a prebuilt Ray training image for EKS so a PyTorch cluster no longer needs its own CUDA, NCCL and EFA stack

AspireAI community · AWS Machine Learning Blog
AWS publishes the Ray Train Deep Learning Container in ECR Public, assembling CUDA, cuDNN, NCCL, the EFA userspace libraries, the AWS OFI NCCL plugin and Ray at versions AWS tests together, so teams stop rebuilding an image whenever one layer moves. The walkthrough fine-tunes Qwen2.5-1.5B with PyTorch FSDP across eight NVIDIA L4 GPUs on two g6.12xlarge instances with no image build at all: one RayCluster manifest, a file of environment variables, and a training function with no container or cluster logic in it. The networking layer is the one the post singles out, because an EFA and NCCL mismatch does not throw, it silently falls back to TCP sockets and completes at a fraction of the speed. With the prebuilt path the EFA transport doubled throughput over TCP on unchanged code, and the full setup runs about $9.50 an hour for the GPU instances. It is an operations recipe rather than a new capability, and the sample is deliberately small: one 1.5B model on eight L4s, which is a floor for the pattern rather than a production-scale result.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE

One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
