GitHub's Copilot Memory reached general availability, and 93 percent of reviewed CLI sessions showed better adherence to developer preferences

AspireAI community · GitHub Changelog
GitHub intelligence is a new context and learning layer built on GitHub's own data graph, and its first piece, Copilot Memory, is now generally available on paid Copilot plans. Copilot can carry personal preferences and repository conventions across the app, CLI, VS Code, the cloud agent, code review, Slack, Teams and GitHub Mobile; among the Copilot CLI sessions GitHub reviewed during the public preview where the agent actually used memory, 93 percent showed better adherence to developer preferences and 42 percent showed more efficient workflows. Dreaming is in public preview with three modes (personal memory curation, repository customization, and code review customization), and code search can now reach across repositories without a local clone. The honest limit: the 93 and 42 percent figures come from GitHub's own review of preview sessions rather than a controlled benchmark, and dream runs consume AI credits.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE

One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
