An agent was split into roles that solve, inspect and continue, because one role cannot notice its own bad answer

AspireAI community · arXiv (multimodal tool-use agents)
Reinforcement learning for multimodal tool-using agents usually trains a single role that searches and answers for a terminal reward. That misses how people actually work with tools: they inspect the evidence they just retrieved, reformulate the query when it does not support an answer, and revise the conclusion. MRC-MMAgent puts that loop inside the training signal. It builds a multi-role collaborative loop of solving, inspection and continuation, so the agent can gather evidence through tools, evaluate the preceding trajectory, and resume when the current answer is not sufficiently supported. A role-coupled objective combines task success, interaction validity and successful correction, optimised over the decisions produced by all roles across the full trajectory. Using only the original baseline training set with no additional dataset construction, the method consistently outperforms its base models and reaches leading or highly competitive performance across benchmarks. The authors report relative comparisons rather than absolute scores, and the multi-role loop adds turns to every tool-using rollout.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Research
One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
