Apriel Voice 27B Preview puts speech, reasoning and tool calling in one open model

AspireAI community · arXiv
ServiceNow's Apriel Voice 27B Preview is an open speech-language model that unifies speech understanding, reasoning and tool use on a single reasoning backbone, keeping text and image input as well. It is built on the post-trained Gemma 4 26B-A4B checkpoint and processes speech directly, generating both responses and tool calls without a separate dialogue model. Training is two-stage: a first stage that establishes the speech interface, then a second that jointly adapts the projector and backbone through supervised fine-tuning, text replay and source-dependent cross-entropy and forward KL supervision, using online distillation with a local teacher and fused full-vocabulary losses. In thinking mode the authors report a score of 98.90 on Big Bench Audio, 81.13 on Speech-BFCL and a task success rate of 65.51% on tau-Voice with a mean latency of 1.91 seconds, plus 51.27% English EVA accuracy. The caveat is that the weights shipped as a preview and the paper is a preprint with no peer review noted; the authors also describe deploying it on a custom serving platform, so the latency figure reflects their own stack rather than a standard third-party serving setup.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Research
One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
