A correct causal mask is not enough: auditing hidden future-token leakage in adaptive decoders

AspireAI community · arXiv (Guilin University of Electronic Technology, University of Chile)
A model with a perfectly correct attention mask can still peek at future tokens - and it produced a fake 60% drop in validation loss. Researchers at Guilin audited an adaptive routing decoder whose attention mask was perfectly causal. A sequence-level summary was still broadcasting the whole sequence, so prefix positions could see future tokens. The payoff was a fake result. Validation loss fell from 3.5958 to 1.4259 - an apparent architectural win - while free-running generation got worse. The reusable part is the tooling: a prefix-invariance audit, a max prefix-output discrepancy score called LeakScore, and layer-wise profiles that point at the leaking path. Caveat: one architecture family, one paper. The contribution is the audit method, not the numbers. https://arxiv.org/abs/2610.31522

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Research
One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
