Automatic rubric generation scored frontier model answers 9 percent closer to expert-written rubrics

AspireAI community · arXiv (cs.AI)
Rubricon generates discriminative rubrics for tasks that have no verifiable answer, without human preference labels, rubric annotation or a trained generator model: it samples several rubrics with any LLM, keeps the most discriminative candidate, adds criteria capturing overlooked requirements or response flaws, and prunes criteria that are misaligned or shallow. Across five professional, consumer, clinical and general-use LLM benchmarks, the rubric scores it produced for frontier model answers showed 9% greater alignment with labor-intensive expert-authored rubrics than the best alternative synthetic rubric generation method among RRD, QSRG, OpenRubrics and agentic generation via harnesses like Codex. On HealthBench, post-training a Qwen3.5-9B model with Rubricon rubrics yielded 4.5% better performance than training with rubrics from RRD, the strongest alternative generator. The limitation: the rubrics are themselves model-generated, so generator bias propagates into the reward signal.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Research
One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
