STRIATUM-CTF put schema validation in front of the tools, and reached 77.8 percent with no procedural documentation at all

AspireAI community · arXiv
Agents that pipe model output straight into a shell are brittle: they emit malformed commands, hallucinate options that do not exist, and lose track of earlier findings as the context fills. STRIATUM-CTF mediates between LLM reasoning and tool execution over the Model Context Protocol, exposing offensive-security tools as strictly typed, schema-validated functions, so out-of-schema calls are rejected before execution and the agent gets structured observations to self-correct against. In a controlled study of 180 runs across 15 CTF challenges under four levels of attached procedural documentation it succeeded on 77.8-86.7 percent of attempts, with the schema-only configuration reaching 77.8 percent on its own. The authors are explicit that the live competition win, at one event against more than 30 teams, is a feasibility demonstration rather than evidence of superiority over human experts.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE

One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
