An LLM-assisted attack re-introduced vulnerabilities in 32 of 33 CVEs by manipulating pull request metadata, while naive template attacks failed and raised suspicion

AspireAI community · arXiv
Automated code review is moving into CI/CD pipelines as both an assistant and an autonomous agent, and this paper asks whether an attacker can steer its security verdicts without touching the code itself. The mechanism is the framing effect: presentation overrides semantic content. The authors first ran a large exploratory study across 6 LLMs under 5 framing conditions and found the effect systematic and widespread in vulnerability detection, then built a controlled environment over 33 CVEs across 20 real projects and 2 production review pipelines, Claude Code and CodeRabbit. A template-based attack failed and sometimes backfired because direct biasing attempts look suspicious. An LLM-assisted refinement attack succeeded in 32 of 33 cases, 97 percent, by exploiting an asymmetry: attackers refine against a local clone of the pipeline while defenders get one shot. The practical implication is about process, not a single bypass: the paper argues for human oversight and contributor trust over relying on automated review.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Research
One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
