The same smoking-cessation question produced different answers depending on who the model thought was asking

AspireAI community · arXiv (cs.AI)
This audit asks whether everyone gets the same health advice from a chatbot. Six widely deployed LLMs from four providers answered the same four smoking-cessation questions as twelve personas differing in life stage, self-described expertise and smoking history, for 2,880 responses in total. What the models say depends on who appears to be asking: every model named FDA-approved prescription cessation medications less often to teen personas than to adult personas, by 32 to 67 percentage points, and in five of six models a persona presenting healthcare expertise received fewer facts than one presenting none. A short system prompt specifying a factual floor narrowed persona differences in every model, but its effect on overall fact coverage varied in both magnitude and direction, so a prompt validated on one system cannot be assumed to transfer to another. The authors also caution that equal mention rates are not the correct clinical target, since prescription pharmacotherapy is not recommended for minors.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE

One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
