An agentic sketching workflow decomposed a scene into Bézier curves, placed them with a self-evolving memory, and refined the result with diffusion priors

AspireAI community · arXiv
Existing sketch generation methods rely on image guidance and are largely limited to individual objects or simplified scenes, leaving text-guided complex scene sketching underexplored. SketchDirector is an agentic framework that mimics the human sketching workflow for multi-concept scenes: an LLM first decomposes the scene into draft assets, each represented as a set of Bézier curves, then an agentic reasoning loop iteratively plans and executes their spatial arrangement guided by self-evolving memory, and a detail refinement module uses diffusion priors to enhance sketch quality while preserving geometric structure. The paper also introduces MCSketch8K, a dataset of editable vector assets, compositional layouts and object-level manipulation annotations. Experiments show SketchDirector outperforming state-of-the-art baselines in semantic and compositional quality while effectively preserving overall contour organization during refinement. The limitation is that the refinement step relies on diffusion priors, so the pipeline inherits both their latency and their tendency to alter geometry outside the areas the agent explicitly composed.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE

One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
