Self-improving agents silently drop their own safety rules, because the acceptance gate cannot see what a deleted safeguard was blocking

AspireAI community · arXiv (cs.AI)
When an LLM agent edits its own harness and keeps an edit only if an acceptance gate scores it higher, a safeguard sitting behind another working safeguard is masked: the gate sees task success, so redundancy erodes unseen. Across 411 improvement loops over ten gate rules, a deletion hidden behind a working safeguard added almost no observable harm, and larger evaluation batches made it worse: at equal cost, 20-task batches kept every harness protected while 40-task batches lost all six. The authors also ran the GEPA optimizer, which kept every safety rule verbatim yet still shipped two of three final harnesses that misused credentials under a weaker model. The practical takeaway is to freeze safety text and audit one-layer ablations rather than trust the gate.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE

One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
