Google Project Suncatcher satellite returns its first AI response from orbit

AspireAI community · Google Research
Google ran an AI model in orbit and got a haiku back, and the poem was never the point. On October 1 Google launched a prototype satellite built with Planet on a SpaceX rideshare. This week, during a ground-station pass, the team uplinked a prompt to an onboard Gemma 4 model running on a data-center-class TPU, asked it for a haiku about being in space, and got the poem back down as the satellite passed Svalbard. Google calls it the first AI response from a data-center-class TPU in orbit. They also ran limericks and telemetry prompts. The honest limit: one short prompt in one ground pass proves the hardware boots and computes, not that orbital AI is viable. Google says the real test, thermal stress and radiation exposure, has not run yet. https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/models-and-research/google-research/project-suncatcher-satellite-response

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE

One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
