Underwater manipulation training data and an open-source ROV kit got a generalist vision-language-action policy to a 93.3 percent success rate in a pool, and an action-chunking transformer to 47.9 percent on a WWII wreck

AspireAI community · arXiv
Marine visual distortion and currents create a severe domain shift for robot policies, so the authors collected 1616 episodes of underwater manipulation in calm and turbulent water and trained 14 generalist vision-language-action models with varying proprioception configurations, reaching a 93.3% overall success rate including partial successes across 1260 gradable on-hardware pool rollouts. A separate case study on the WWII wreck Coralita X127 and at Manoel Island Marina in Malta found that a single-task Action Chunking Transformer substantially outperformed the generalist SmolVLA policy, 47.9% against 7.9% pooled success across 748 collected episodes and 508 gradable rollouts. The BLUEMBODIED KIT used to collect data, train models and deploy policies on the ROV is open sourced, but the marine results rest on a small number of tasks and sites.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Research
One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
