Video world models look fine locally and fall apart over long exploration, with 1,600 rollouts across 10 models exposing a gap existing benchmarks miss

AspireAI community · arXiv
Video world models are supposed to synthesize persistent 3D worlds that stay coherent across time and space, but existing benchmarks typically evaluate short interactions or camera trajectories fixed before generation, leaving long-horizon exploration with heavy camera motion under-explored. WorldProbe is a diagnostic benchmark that uses a goal-conditioned multimodal agent to adapt camera actions online during generation, comprising 164 test cases across four probing families; the authors generated more than 1,600 rollouts totaling roughly 800 minutes across 10 state-of-the-art models with horizons up to 180 seconds. Evaluating across four dimensions showed both the degradation of local measures and the emergence of long-range inconsistencies, with recent models holding up visual and content quality for longer while long-range memory and evolution remained weak. The result exposes a gap between locally stable generation and persistent world consistency that current benchmarks largely miss. The limitation is the diagnostic nature of the benchmark: it identifies where models break without prescribing a method that fixes them.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE

One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
