Assistants forget how you sounded: a benchmark where the answer depends on tone, and standard speech-to-text pipelines throw the signal away

AspireAI community · arXiv (cs.AI / cs.LG)
VoiceLongMemEval attaches emotion labels, prosody descriptors and voice events to conversational turns so that every question depends on paralinguistic metadata that the words alone cannot recover, with each item passing a three-stage adversarial gate that ensures a strong model fails on the transcript by itself. Evaluating leading frontier and open-weight models revealed a pervasive affect gap: supplying the metadata as text raised accuracy by 0.09 to 0.38, or 0.61 to 0.69 with evidence hints, while standard ASR pipelines systematically discard the signal. Audio-native models recovered the cues directly from speech at 0.354 to 0.412 against 0.325 blind. The limitation: the benchmark's scale and its code and dataset are only promised upon acceptance, so it is not yet independently usable.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Research
One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
