Post-training a 30B model with 3B active parameters took financial research agents from 42.5 to 58.9 percent on FrontierFinance at an eleventh of the cost

Samaya reports that a 30B mixture-of-experts Nemotron 3.5 Lightning model with only 3B active parameters, post-trained through two supervised and two reinforcement-learning stages, scores 58.9% on the 220 public questions of FrontierFinance, ahead of Claude Fable 5.1 at 55.9%, while costing $0.61 per question against $6.89. The four stages are reported separately (synthetic SFT 51.4%, best-teacher SFT 54.8%, offline GRPO 57.5%, online GRPO 58.9%), and the harness was co-adapted with the model, using a condenser and compactor so a small model can sustain long research. The limitation is that FrontierFinance is Samaya's own benchmark, and the model and harness are tuned together for that evaluation.

Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
