Anthropic says one agent with skills often beats a fleet of subagents, and shipped a migration kit

AspireAI community · Anthropic
*Anthropic is telling teams to delete most of their subagents.* Its Applied AI team compared multi-agent builds against one agent with skills, and the single loop often won on quality, cost and latency. One customer saw roughly 2x faster runs. They cut the Claude Code system prompt for newer models by over 80 percent, and say models from Opus 4.5 onward can carry the plan themselves. The failure modes it names will be familiar: subagent sprawl, context lost at every handoff, and a "Frankenprompt" of contradictory rules. It ships an Apache-2.0 migration kit that scores each subagent before you fold it. Caveat: Anthropic's own deployments, and the kit is a reference implementation that is not maintained. https://claude.com/resources/articles/building-agents-when-to-fold-subagents-into-your-main-agent-loop

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE

One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
