Making an image editor copy the photo instead of ignoring it dropped edit success from 81% to 24%

AspireAI community · arXiv
Proactive defenses against diffusion-transformer editors like Flux Kontext usually try to make the output attend less to the protected reference image - which leaves the model free to follow the edit instruction anyway. The authors find the opposite works better: concentrating target-token attention on the reference in just a few early blocks collapses the editing behaviour, making the model reproduce its input instead of executing the transformation. Copying-as-Defense maximizes per-token target-to-reference attention mass in early transformer blocks, which also lets the backpropagation path be truncated to keep optimization cheap. Across editors and benchmarks it reduces average edit success from 81.4% on unprotected images to 24.0% - a 70.6% relative reduction, and 44.3% better than DeContext, the strongest baseline at 43.0% - while running roughly 1.8-2.0x faster per optimization step. The honest limit: the defense is a lossy copy rather than a hard refusal, and the perturbation has to be applied before the image is shared. https://arxiv.org/abs/2610.35566

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Research
One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
