SEAL cut prompt-injection attack success on AgentDojo from 34.6 to 0.1 percent while using 127x fewer defence tokens

AspireAI community · arXiv
Indirect prompt injection reaches local agents through untrusted tool output, and most defences either spend heavily or blunt the task evidence along with the attack. SEAL learns a soft prompt and a scoring readout offline, then sanitises tool output against a frozen task model using a reference built only from trusted initial context, so the reference never depends on the text being inspected and no separate verifier model is needed. On AgentDojo it reduces attack success from 34.6 percent to 0.1 percent and raises joint task completion without attack success from 51.4 to 77.5 percent, using roughly 127 times fewer defence-related tokens than PISanitizer. The paper reports replication on a second backbone with the same training recipe, though it gives no separate numbers for that replication, and the headline reduction is measured on AgentDojo.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Research
One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
