Streaming video benchmarks can be passed without using history, and the best streaming system scores 49 percent where general models score 67 to 91

AspireAI community · arXiv (cs.CV)
High accuracy on streaming video benchmarks does not establish whether a model actually uses visual history. A review of OVO-Bench and StreamingBench finds that recent frames alone suffice for 32 percent of sampled historical questions, and that models also answer many questions correctly from the question and options alone. TwinPast tests whether answers follow changes in history using 350 human-reviewed video pairs across five historical tasks, each pair holding recent context, question and ordered options fixed while changing critical historical evidence and the correct answer, scored by PairAcc, which requires both histories to be answered correctly. Across 34 model and input configurations, historical inputs improve performance for Qwen3-VL-8B and DeepSeek-Flash, reversing the recent-frame advantage seen on existing benchmarks. The strongest evaluated streaming system reaches 49.14 percent PairAcc against 66.57-91.43 percent for evaluated general-purpose models, and the gap persists across all five tasks.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Research
One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
