Agents recover a changed user requirement less than half the time, even in small shopping tasks

Agents have to adapt when a user revises requirements mid-task, which is rarely measured directly. IntentDelta is a human-constructed multi-turn benchmark with 638 trajectories and 3,766 turns across WebShop and TravelPlanner, where each turn pairs a user utterance with a cumulative intention state and human reference actions. Eleven agents were evaluated on intention recovery and action quality: average intention recovery is 33.1 percent in TravelPlanner and 44.7 percent in WebShop, and average action score is 31.6 and 41.0 percent respectively. The failures are consistent: agents lose earlier requirements and confuse soft preferences with must-have constraints, and correct intention recovery does not guarantee successful execution. The benchmark is small and covers two task domains, so the numbers describe a specific and demanding setting rather than general agent performance.

Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
