CORAL let an 8B agent hit 42.8 percent on GAIA while using 6-7x fewer input tokens than a ReAct agent

AspireAI community · arXiv (Zhu, Liang, Chen, Yu, Jia)
CORAL gives an agent a callable working-memory toolset: it checkpoints task progress and verified facts, then resets a cluttered context and resumes from a clean state, with checkpointing sharpened by a Multi-episode Agentic Reinforced Policy Optimization algorithm. On GAIA an 8B model using CORAL reaches 42.8 percent average accuracy, and the authors report it consumes 6-7 times fewer input tokens than a ReAct agent, so the accuracy comes with a lower inference bill rather than a higher one. The same approach lifts a strong proprietary agent by 8.0 points on BrowseComp and transfers to multi-hop knowledge QA. The paper is accepted at COLM 2026 and the BrowseComp gain is measured on a proprietary agent the abstract does not name.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Research
One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
