A teacher model wrote its reasoning into a reusable bank, and a small model read it at inference time

AspireAI community · arXiv (Mustafa Safa Ozdayi)
Distillation normally means fine-tuning a small model on a frontier model's outputs, which costs training compute and leaves the transferred skill opaque. Artifact Distillation drops the gradient step: a teacher solves training instances, externalizes its problem-solving procedure into an artifact bank, and a student queries that bank at inference time with no weight updates. Across four LiveBench tasks, a bank written by Claude Opus 4.5 let Claude Haiku 4.5 beat unaided Claude Sonnet 4.5 on spatial reasoning (0.707 vs. 0.647) at 60% of its cost, and reach Sonnet 4.5's level on table joining at 89% of its cost. The same raw bank lifted Qwen3.5-27B's pooled score from 0.730 to 0.800, so the transfer is not confined to one model family. The limitation is that the bank is only as good as the teacher that wrote it, and the paper evaluates four LiveBench tasks rather than general capability.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Research
One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
