Teaching a robot contact-rich manipulation from human hands: tactile-conditioned retargeting reached 72.5% success while collecting demos 7x faster

AspireAI community · arXiv (cs.RO)
Human demonstrations are cheap and scalable for dexterous manipulation, but different sensing and hand anatomy make the transfer awkward. TouchBridge pairs a wearable human interface with a robot interface to establish cross-embodiment correspondence in visual and fingertip tactile sensing, and its Tac-Retarget method aligns fingertip contact patches and preserves their spatial relations using measured contact alone, with no object mesh, object-pose estimate or physics simulation required. Policies fine-tuned only on TouchBridge-converted human demos hit 72.5% average success across four real-world contact-rich tasks against 77.5% for the same number of teleoperated robot demos, while collection ran 7.0x faster, and Tac-Retarget beat DexPilot and UniDex by 25.0 and 42.5 points. The limitation: it still trails teleoperation on success rate, it just closes most of the gap far more cheaply.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Research
One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
