AI agents now steer a radio telescope array, and the pipeline caught its first real-time pulsar detection in the Crab Nebula

Breakthrough Listen and the SETI Institute have put agentic AI into the daily search for extraterrestrial intelligence at the Allen Telescope Array, where agents can steer the instrument, enhance and correct incoming data and apply models to the live stream from a single natural-language request. The DAQIRI library pulls terabits per second of sensor data straight into GPU memory so observations are processed in flight rather than filling hard drives, and the Nexus web-based observatory orchestrator acts as the agent harness - giving agents a single source of truth for instrument state, compute and pipelines. The system handles 2.4 terabits per second on NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPUs, with inference running on premises next to the instrument. The pipeline has already achieved the first real-time AI detection of a pulsar in the Crab Nebula, and the team is now evaluating open models including NVIDIA Nemotron. The limitation: this is one observatory's deployment, and the models themselves are still being assessed.

Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
