Separating what an agent chose to do from what the world actually did, so the two can be scored apart

AspireAI community · arXiv
World models can give multimodal agents simulated experience and agent trajectories can refine world models, but evaluating that loop needs separate evidence about action selection and state evolution. Dual Exam fixes the environment response mechanism when testing agents and fixes the action intervention when testing world models, across physical, digital, social and scientific domains. The agent track compares 10 configurations on 1,088 items in 15 reporting categories; the world-model track has 400 cases across eight scenarios. GPT 6 Astra leads the case-weighted Agent Index at 31.3 and GPT-Image-2 leads the full-coverage world-model overall at 21.7 - different tasks and metrics, so not directly comparable. A 150-case pilot of one coupled pairing recorded zero task successes, which the authors read as a reason for component-level diagnosis. Their value for predicting coupled success or sustained reciprocal learning is not yet established.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE

One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
