A knitted glove with fingertip force sensors and IMU pose tracking detected a 0.59 N minimum force, 1.6 to 2.7 times lower than commercial tactile gloves

AspireAI community · arXiv
Useful robot manipulation data needs calibrated fingertip force and hand pose at once, and no wearable platform previously offered both without changing how people move their hands. Tactus is a textile-integrated glove with a 1.5 mm fingertip stackup, capacitive tactile sensors placed using empirical contact studies, and IMU-fused pose tracking that holds up through hand-object occlusion where manipulation data is most valuable, plus a documented calibration pipeline for cross-glove and per-subject consistency. It resolves a minimum detectable force of 0.59 N at 95 percent confidence, 1.6 to 2.7 times lower than two commercial baselines, with 0.87 cross-participant consistency and 11.0 mm fingertip keypoint error during manipulation. The authors also report the first quantitative cross-platform comparison of its kind, against those two commercial gloves.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Research
One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
