An empirical study of OpenClaw agent security found 521 CWE instances across 59 weakness types from 25,000 Reddit posts and 358 security-tagged GitHub issues

AspireAI community · arXiv (The Wild Wide West of OpenClaw Agentic System Security, Akhond et al.)
Personal assistant frameworks like OpenClaw combine LLM reasoning, persistent memory, tool calls, local execution and web workflows, so untrusted inputs meeting model output without explicit trust boundaries is the normal case rather than the edge case. This study analyzes more than 25,000 Reddit posts across 13 OpenClaw subreddits plus 358 security-tagged GitHub issues, keeping 180 issues with concrete security concerns, and maps them to 521 CWE instances across 59 weakness types, concentrated in access control, sensitive-data exposure, injection and unsafe execution. The authors also consolidate 543 practitioner suggestions into seven strategies and reconstruct one representative sensitive-data exposure pathway using dummy secret values. It is a study of reported issues, not an audit of a live deployment.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE

One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
