A world model watching from outside the robot caught 26 percent more anomalies with no onboard sensors at all

Anomaly detection on industrial robots usually needs access to the machine - motor encoders, joint currents, the works. Legacy hardware often does not have those sensors, and security rules sometimes forbid touching them. AWARE, from Imperial College London's BOLD lab, drops that requirement: it estimates the robot's hidden dynamics from external camera monitoring alone and flags anomalies from the predicted trajectory and the inferred parameters. Evaluated across 240 real-world robotic crane trajectories, including payload collisions and motor degradations, AWARE improves anomaly classification by 26 percent over the strongest baseline under noisy camera-only state estimation. The inferred dynamics parameter also decodes to a source: the method localises the degrading motor with 88 percent accuracy. Project page and code are released under the adaptive-intelligent-robotics organisation. The limitation is that it is a crane dataset - 240 trajectories of one machine type - and the state estimation is camera-based, so occlusion and lighting remain the weak point the noisy-estimation condition is meant to expose. https://arxiv.org/abs/2610.32742

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Research
One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
